Goldman Sachs Emerging Leaders Series
Division
Risk
Location
Salt Lake City, UT
I spent several months in Goldman Sachs' Emerging Leaders program learning how the Risk Division actually operates: not the polished version you see in presentations, but the messy, high-stakes work of identifying threats before they materialize.
The program combined virtual workshops with an in-person intensive in Salt Lake City, where I worked through case studies on financial and non-financial risk assessment. I learned frameworks for evaluating market volatility, operational vulnerabilities, and regulatory compliance, then practiced applying them to real scenarios with professionals who live in that pressure every day.
What stood out wasn't just the technical training, but the emphasis on communication. Risk analysts don't just run models. They have to translate complex findings for traders, executives, and regulators who need to make decisions fast. The workshops pushed us to build that skill: taking uncertainty and making it intelligible.
I left with a sharper understanding of how data science functions in high-stakes environments and a network of peers who are equally serious about using analytical rigor to solve problems that matter.
